The artwork

"White Horse Grazing" is one of the best-known works by Giovanni Fattori, a leading exponent of the Macchiaioli movement. The work was painted around 1870, a period of great artistic ferment in Italy and particularly in Tuscany, where Fattori worked. It depicts a horse, a symbol of strength and nobility, but does so in an apparently humble setting, perhaps a working field. Fattori was particularly drawn to subjects linked to the Tuscan countryside and to the military world, having himself taken part in the wars of the Risorgimento.

The use of light is fundamental: the horse is lit so as to stand out against the background, creating a strong contrast. The painting is rapid and essential, with brushstrokes that suggest rather than define the details, just as the theory of the "macchia" prescribed. This immediacy and visual freshness gave the work a surprising modernity for its time.
