White Center is a key work of 1950 that defined Mark Rothko's mature style. The oil on canvas is dominated by four rectangles of colour floating on a Rose background. The composition is structured vertically: a large Yellow block at the top, followed by thin Black and White bands (the White Center of the title), and a Lavender lower section.
Rothko achieved a deep luminosity by applying thinned paint in delicate glazes, causing the edges to dissolve and vibrate. This creates an optical effect in which the colour fields seem to float and recede at the same time, inviting the viewer to meditative contemplation.
The artist aimed to convey the "basic human emotions" (tragedy, ecstasy) through the pure interaction of colour and form, eliminating every descriptive element.
