An original and luminous 18th-century view of Westminster Bridge in London, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. Prominent is the Lord Mayor’s Procession on the Thames, with many boats all around the Lord Mayor’s great barge, propelled by thirty oarsmen. The bridge with its 15 arches links the two banks of the Thames; on the right a portion of 18th-century London can be seen. The sky has some pale clouds on the horizon, but the day remains fine. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1747. Canal painted numerous variants of this picture. The dominant colour of the painting is blue.
