Claude Monet's painting of Westminster Bridge is one of several works the artist devoted to the city of London. Monet visited the British capital at different times, notably during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and again between 1899 and 1901.
In these series of paintings, Westminster Bridge, together with Parliament and other views of the Thames, became a recurring subject. The artist was fascinated by London's unique atmosphere, especially the fog and the light effects it created, capable of transforming the appearance of the buildings and the river. For Monet, the fog was not an obstacle, but an element that gave the city a “mysterious grandeur” and a “magnificent breadth”. His London works often capture the bridge and its surroundings in different atmospheric conditions and at different times of day, exploring how light and mist altered colours and outlines.
