The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of Westminster Bridge in London by Giovanni Antonio Canal. Prominent is the Lord Mayor's Procession on the Thames, with many boats all around the Lord Mayor's great barge, rowed by thirty oarsmen. The bridge, with its 15 arches, links the two banks of the Thames, and on the right part of 18th-century London can be seen. There are pale clouds on the horizon, but the day remains fine.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1747. Canaletto painted numerous variants of this picture.
