The artwork
The Wedding at Cana by Giotto di Bondone, frescoed between 1303 and 1305 in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, depicts Christ's first miracle: the transformation of water into wine during a wedding banquet. The scene is set in an elegant room, with Jesus and the Virgin Mary seated at the center of the table, surrounded by the newlyweds and their guests. Servants in the foreground pour water into amphorae that will soon become wine, while the guests gaze in amazement at the miracle. Giotto imbues the composition with balance and vivacity, combining solemnity and everyday realism: the gestures, gazes, and arrangement of the figures create a natural narrative rhythm.
The artist thus manages to transform a sacred event into a family scene, marked by intense humanity and profound spiritual harmony.
