The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of Warwick Castle, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the near bank of the river in front of the castle walls, peopled with scenes of everyday life. Further back is the castle, in English style, with its high crenellated walls. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon, and the day is fine.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1748.
