The artwork
Original and luminous eighteenth-century view of Warwick Castle, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, we can see the riverbank in front of the castle walls, populated by people and depicting scenes of daily life. Further in the background, there is the Anglo-Saxon-style castle with its high crenellated walls. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon, but it's a beautiful day.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1748. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
