In the foreground there is the volcano, with two eruptive vents, fully active. Further downstream, the city unfolds, with houses and palaces. The harbor, a docking point for several large vessels, is clearly visible. On the left, several observers are watching this unusual natural spectacle: an eruption.
For this painting, Canaletto drew inspiration from Vesuvius or Etna, which he saw during one of his travels in southern Italy. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. This oil on canvas painting is undated. It's part of a private collection
