An original, rare and luminous depiction of a volcanic island with its harbour, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the volcano, with two vents, in full eruption. Further down the slope lies the town, with houses and buildings. Prominent is the harbour, a mooring for several large ships. On the left are some onlookers watching the unusual spectacle of nature, an eruption.
For this painting Canaletto was inspired by Vesuvius or Etna, seen on one of his journeys in southern Italy. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. The work belongs to a private collection.
