The artwork
A rare and luminous original depiction of a volcanic island with a harbor, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the volcano, with two eruptive vents, fully active. Further downstream, the city unfolds, with houses and palaces. The harbor, a docking point for several large vessels, is clearly visible. On the left there are several observers watching this unusual natural spectacle: an eruption. Canaletto was inspired by the Vesuvius or Etna, which he saw during one of his travels in southern Italy. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection.
