An original, rare and luminous depiction of a volcanic island with its harbour, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the volcano with two erupting vents, in full activity. Further down lies the town, with houses and palazzi. The harbour stands out, a mooring for several large ships. On the left a few onlookers are watching nature's unusual spectacle, an eruption. For this painting Canaletto drew inspiration from Vesuvius or Etna, seen during one of his journeys in southern Italy. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection.
