The artwork
Pontormo was twenty and working alongside Andrea del Sarto and Rosso Fiorentino: this Visitation is one of his first masterpieces. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- A large crowded scene around the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth.
- A spacious work for a living room, a hall or an entrance.
- A gift for a birth or for anyone who loves Florence and sacred art.
The Chiostrino dei Voti is the entrance portico of the basilica of Santissima Annunziata in Florence. The Servite friars had it frescoed by Andrea del Sarto and his former assistants, Pontormo and Rosso: master and pupils on the same wall, side by side. Pontormo was given the Visitation, painted between 1514 and 1516.
The fresco, detached from the wall, came to Rome for the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale thanks to today's Servite friars; it belongs to the Fondo Edifici di Culto of the Italian Ministry of the Interior. In the exhibition it opens the route, and the Visitation at Carmignano, painted fifteen years later, closes it. The same subject at the beginning and at the end: a painter's whole journey.
In a living room, a hall or an entrance: it is the gift for a birth and for anyone who loves Florence, Andrea del Sarto and his pupils.
