The artwork
Vision After the Sermon is one of the most emblematic paintings of Paul Gauguin’s Synthetist phase. The work depicts a group of Breton women who, having heard a sermon, imagine the biblical scene of Jacob wrestling with the angel. Gauguin sharply separates the real world from the spiritual one through the use of colour: the intense red background creates an unreal, visionary space in which the mystical scene takes shape. The figures are stylised, almost two-dimensional, influenced by the Japanese prints the artist greatly admired.
The oblique line of the tree divides the canvas into two planes: faith and vision. This work marks a fundamental moment in Gauguin’s career, as it represents the abandonment of Impressionism in favour of a symbolic, emotional and spiritual language that would have a great influence on modern art.
