The artwork
The The Virgin Annunciate of Palermo by Antonello da Messina is one of the most celebrated and innovative works of the Italian Renaissance. The Virgin is depicted half-length, isolated against a neutral background, caught at the moment of the Annunciation without the presence of the angel. The gesture of the raised hand and the intense gaze suggest surprise, recollection and inner awareness. The face is modelled by a clear light that heightens its realism and psychological depth.
The blue mantle, essential and geometric, lends the figure monumentality. The masterly use of oil and the synthesis of formal rigour and introspection make the work a masterpiece of expressive modernity.
