This 1949 work marks Mark Rothko's arrival at his mature style, an intense and frontal expression of Color Field Painting. The composition is dominated by two main fields in vertical tension: an upper block of Violet and a lower block of Orange and Yellow, divided by a horizontal line of Black.
The colour ground is crucial: the edges of the canvas reveal the underlying Red and the White , which radiate light through the glazes, making the rectangles appear to float, almost spiritual. The warm colours (Orange, Yellow) and cool colours (Violet, Black) clash, creating a "battle of opposites" which, according to the artist, embodies existential conflicts.
