The artwork
An original 18th-century engraving depicting the title page of a series of views, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. With this engraving the artist created his cover for a collection of London engravings. The small mausoleum bears Canaletto's name and a reference to Mr Joseph Smith, who suggested the engravings to be depicted.
The work is not dated, and there are many variants of this engraving.
