The dominant elements are boats, particularly the galleon depicted moored to the right of the painting. The boats vary in size, carrying goods or passengers, and move along the canal, signaling the lively Venetian traffic. The sun illuminates the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basilica, and the other buildings in the square. This undated work is part of van Wittel's oeuvre, created during a stay in Venice, a city he loved and depicted much.
