The artwork
This work, dated 1697, is part of van Wittel's oeuvre, created during a stay in Venice, a city he loved and depicted very much. The painting illustrates a view of the city from the Island of San Giorgio. Boats dominate, particularly the Galleon, represented moored to the right of the painting. The boats vary in size, carrying goods or passengers, and move along the canal, signaling the lively Venetian traffic.
The sun illuminates the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basilica, and the other buildings in the square. The dominant colors are the shades of azure and pale blue of the sky and the canal water, depicted in green and gray mixed with azure.
The work is housed in the Prado Museum, Madrid, Spain.
