A rare and most valuable view of Venice by Gaspare Vanvitelli. The painting portrays the city from the Island of San Giorgio. The dominant elements are the boats and gondolas. The boats vary in size, carry goods or passengers and move all along the canal, signalling the liveliness of Venetian trade. This work, dated 1719, belongs to the output van Wittel produced during a stay in Venice, a city much loved and often painted by the artist.
The day is slightly overcast, with the Doge's Palace, St Mark's Basilica and the other buildings on the square standing out. The dominant colours are the shades of light blue and pale grey of the sky and the water of the canal, itself painted in blue-green shades.
The work is held at the Musée Municipal, Dole, France.
