A romantic view of Rome painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli, with St Peter's in the background, while Castel Gandolfo is depicted on the right. The Tiber seems almost to unite these buildings; it is plied by small boats carrying goods or people and spanned by a large bridge with three main arches.
In the background is a fine blue sky crossed by thin clouds. The detail of the "onlookers" at the far left of the painting is especially fine.
The painting is dated 1690 and was made by Vanvitelli during one of his many stays in Rome.
