A refined historical view of the River Tiber by Gaspare Vanvitelli with strong chiaroscuro. The painting highlights the life and activities of the Roman citizens on the riverbank, some of them fishing, while St Peter’s can be glimpsed in the background on the right. Along the course of the river appear several boats carrying goods or people. Note the change in the colour of the sky, seen at sunset, in intense blue tones lightening to white, which also appear in the water of the river.
