An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Thames, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The great London river stands out; with its width it dominates the whole painting, plied by boats of various sizes. On the opposite bank London spreads out, with its English-style buildings and tall churches. Closer to the foreground is the white bridge with its 15 arches. The sky has dark clouds on the horizon, drawn by Canaletto in shades of pink, but the day remains fine. The work, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto created other versions of this work.
