The artwork
A refined historical view of St. Peter's Square painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli. Bernini's colonnade stands out; in the center is a group of soldiers, surrounded by figures engaged in various activities. Carriages are depicted on the right side of the painting.
The leaden sky dominates the scene with intense shades of blue and a few barely visible clouds.
The obelisk stands out in the center, while the dome of St. Peter's and the Roman palaces are depicted in the background. The painting is dated circa 1705; this piece is also part of the extensive production Vanvitelli created during his stays in Rome. The painting is exhibited at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria.
