The artwork
Perspective and historical view of St. Peter's Square painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli. Bernini's colonnade, the painting's main theme, stands out. The obelisk dominates the center, and all around are depicted figures engaged in various activities and several cardinals dressed in red, while carriages are depicted on the right side of the painting.
Dominating the scene is a leaden sky with intense shades of blue and a few barely visible clouds.
In the background is the dome of St. Peter's and the Roman palaces. The painting is undated. This painting is also part of the extensive oeuvre Vanvitelli created during his stays in Rome.
The painting is part of a private collection.
