An original, bright 18th-century view of Westminster Bridge in London, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. Prominent is the great river, with many boats, some on the bank, others sailing. Further in the background is the bridge with its 15 arches linking the two banks of the Thames. On the right-hand side is the terrace of Somerset House, on which a few people are strolling. In the distance, again on the right, part of 18th-century London can be seen. The sky has light clouds on the horizon, but the day remains serene.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection. A variant of this work by Canaletto exists.
