Canaletto's “View of San Giuseppe di Castello” captures a corner of Venice in transformation, more building site than postcard. In the foreground the drained canal, with wooden planks and scattered materials, tells of the work on the foundations, while small groups of figures enliven the scene like extras in an urban theatre.
In the background, the façades of the churches and houses stand out beneath a wide, luminous sky, typical of Canaletto's painting, where architectural precision is combined with a subtle attention to everyday Venetian life.
