A unique and rare view of Santa Maria del Priorato in Rome, painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli in pen and brown ink and grey watercolour with red chalk on laid paper. The monument is shown on the right of the painting, while in the background are St Peter’s and the Roman palazzi. The shadow of the monument is finely rendered; at the foot of the steps stands an onlooker. The painting is part of a Bequest of Lore Heinemann to the National Gallery of Art.
