A luminous and refined historical view of Rome painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli from the terrace of a Roman villa, visible on the left of the painting and adorned with a fountain.
On the forecourt, galloping horses and some Roman citizens going about their activities are depicted. The painting has two main softly shaded colour schemes: blue and yellow-brown. The detail of the peacock on the terrace together with other birds is delightful. The picture is one of the few by van Wittel with a certain date: it was painted in 1665. This picture too is part of the prolific output Vanvitelli produced during his stays in Rome. The painting is on display in Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
