The artwork
Giovanni Paolo Pannini’s View of the Roman Forum (1747) is one of the most celebrated examples of 18th-century veduta painting. The artist, a master in the representation of ancient architecture, offers a theatrical vision of Rome’s monumental heart, blending topographical accuracy with dramatic flair.
In the painting, the ruins of the Forum rise in all their grandeur: the Temple of Saturn, the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Colosseum in the background, and other vestiges of antiquity are arranged in harmonious order, almost like a classical stage set. The small, animated human figures add vitality and scale, inviting the viewer to engage with the majesty of the past. A clear, golden light enhances the architecture, creating a balance between archaeological rigor and Baroque elegance.
