A rare 18th-century depiction of Padua, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the river Piovego, plied by a few small boats. On the near bank are scenes of daily life and a rural landscape, while the city unfolds, with its palaces and churches, beyond the far bank. The sky is clear, with no clouds on the horizon. Note the large tree towards the right of the painting, which seems to "watch over" the people at its foot.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1745. Another variant of this work exists.
