The artwork
A rare 18th-century depiction of Padua by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Piovego River, crossed by several small boats. On this side of the riverbank there are scenes of daily life and a rural landscape, while the city, with its palaces and churches, develops beyond. The sky is clear, with no clouds on the horizon. Note the large tree toward the right of the painting, which seems to "watch over" the people at its feet.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1745. Another variant of this work exists.
