A luminous, undated historical view of Piazza del Popolo in Rome by Gaspare Vanvitelli. The original painting is an oil on canvas. In the foreground, the Obelisk, set in the centre of the square, dominates the scene. This picture is part of the prolific output that Vanvitelli produced during his stays in Rome. In the background are the church and, further off, the Roman palaces, with the dome of St Peter's. In the square, small groups of people go about their business. The painting is lit by the setting sun. The shades of yellow and light brown are exquisite.
The artwork is part of a private collection.
