View of the Arch of Constantine with the Colosseum - Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto

The artwork

A distinctive and original frontal view of the Arch of Constantine in the Rome of 1700, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. The Arch is painted in a decaying Rome, with shrubs on the upper part of the walls. The arch's bas-reliefs stand out; the sky is slightly cloudy. Behind the arch appears the majestic form of the Colosseum. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1742. Canal made two other variants of this work.
