This Roman view by Canaletto places a triumphal arch at its centre, probably inspired by that of Septimius Severus, turning it into the setting for a small 18th-century society on the move.
On the uneven paving of the Forum, at once elegant and ruined, well-dressed figures, wayfarers, children playing and even a dog cross paths, creating a continuous dialogue between the ruins of the ancient empire and modern life.
The raking light picks out the bas-reliefs and inscriptions of the arch, while in the background towers and domes remind us that Rome is a palimpsest of superimposed eras, where history always remains the protagonist.

Our reproductions are extremely faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.
It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibres, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with the characteristic deckled edges that bear witness to its handcrafted making.
It is still made today using ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
