The artwork
An original and unusual 18th-century view of Piazza Navona in Rome, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal. On the left is the great church, flanked by palazzi. In the middle of the square, at the far end, is the obelisk, with the fountain nearer the foreground. In the square are horses drawing carriages. The stalls on the right of the square are a distinctive detail. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other variants of this painting exist.
