The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century etching of the small town of Dolo, with a detail of the River Brenta, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Brenta, busy with small boats, while on the banks are scenes of everyday life. Further back are the church of Dolo and, on the other bank, some Venetian palazzi. The day is clear and serene, with a few white clouds on the horizon. On the right, in the distance, the bell tower of Dolo can be seen. The etching is presumed to date from between 1735 and 1746. Canaletto created numerous variants of this etching.
