The artwork
Detail of an 18th-century view of the city of Monaco, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. Monaco is seen from afar, with its church, palaces, and houses. On the left side, a building appears to serve as a customs house for incoming goods. Munich is reflected in its river, highlighted in the painting with its blue-green waters.
The painting is dated 1761 and is exhibited at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA. Copies of this work exist, with color variations.
