The artwork
A romantic sunset view of the islands of San Michele, San Cristoforo and Murano by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, seen from the Fondamenta Nuove. In the foreground is the lagoon with boats sailing, while behind we see the first island, with details of the church and bell tower. Behind this first island is the second, of which only the bell tower can be glimpsed. The day is drawing to a close and there are a few pink clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1725. The work is on display at the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.
