Original and rare 18th-century painting of the Grand Canal by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Grand Canal, bustling with boats, surrounded by beautiful Venetian palaces. Canaletto painted the canal water with shades of blue-green, taking on a color similar to that of the sky. A particular detail is represented by the numerous boats neatly moored in front of the palace on the left bank of the canal; there is likely a reception in progress.
The sky is cloudy, tinged with light blue and white with a few clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1735. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
