In this “View of the Entrance to the Arsenal” Canaletto takes us to the heart of Venetian maritime power, before the great water gate overlooked by towers, bridges and ships being fitted out. The diagonal wooden bridge cuts across the scene and guides the eye towards the two crenellated towers, with the clock and the lions of St Mark, symbols of the Serenissima controlling access to the shipyard.
In the foreground gondolas and smaller boats enliven the canal, while various figures – sailors, craftsmen, passers-by – tell of the constant coming and going of men and goods that brings this strategic hub of the city to life.
