The artwork
A clear and vivid view of Dresden with the Augustus Bridge from 1750, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. The great Elbe River, which divides the city, is prominently featured, connected by the historic Roman Augustus Bridge, reflected in the river. The church can be admired in the center, while in the foreground, on the opposite bank, there are boats and passersby, in particular a noble couple dressed in distinctive light-colored robes. The theme of the painting is the Augustus Bridge with its beautiful and powerful Roman arches, permanently connecting the two banks of the Elbe. The sky, painted by Bellotto with light shades and a few clouds, is dated 1750. It is one of 14 views of the city of Dresden that Bellotto painted during a stay there. Other variations of this work exist.
The painting is exhibited at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden, Germany.
