The artwork
Original 18th-century view of the Doge's Palace, seen from the side, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the busy square in front of the Doge's Palace. The palace stands to the right of Canaletto's painting, depicted in great detail. Boats are moored on the pier, and others, further away, are maneuvering on the Grand Canal. The two columns of Venice are also visible. Further in the background there is the church of Santa Maria della Salute. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. A variant of this painting was painted by Canaletto.
