The artwork

View of the Colosseum by Giovanni Paolo Pannini is one of the masterpieces that best expresses his skill as an 18th-century view painter, capable of blending descriptive rigour and theatrical staging. The painting depicts the Flavian Amphitheatre, the quintessential symbol of ancient Rome, seen from a viewpoint that highlights its architectural grandeur and the monumentality of its arches. Around the Colosseum, Pannini arranges other vestiges of antiquity, conveying the image of an ideal Roman landscape in which history and imagination coexist harmoniously.

In the foreground move figures of travellers, scholars and common folk, who enliven the scene and underline its educational and cultural function. These details place the work in the context of the Grand Tour, the period when Rome became a favourite destination for European artistic and intellectual education. The brilliant colouring, the calibrated use of light and the rigorous perspective transform the view into a manifesto of the magnificence of antiquity and its eternal fascination.
