A few pedestrians are shown at the foot of the monument, while some buildings line the surrounding streets. Other prominent landmarks, such as St. Peter's Basilica or other Roman palaces, are not included; the focus of the scene is entirely on the Colosseum.
The painting is estimated to date from around 1716 and is part of a private collection.
