A luminous and sought-after historical view of the Colosseum painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli at sunset. On the right is the Arch of Constantine. The dominant colour is brown. At the foot of the monument are a few passers-by, while at the sides there are some buildings. No other buildings such as St Peter's or the Roman palaces are depicted; the scene is centred on the Colosseum.
The painting is dated to around 1716 and is part of a private collection.
