An original and rare 18th-century painting of the church of San Giovanni dei Battuti in Murano, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The view is from this side of the lagoon, where a figure is gazing at the church, which stands on the far shore on the island of Murano. The church has a fine façade, but Canaletto portrays it in the shadow of the setting sun. Beyond the church other buildings and bell towers of villages near the island of Murano can be glimpsed, though their outlines are blurred. The sky shows a few white and pink clouds on the horizon.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Another variant of this work by Canaletto exists.
