The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of the Church of the Holy Redeemer and the Church of San Giacomo, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground on the left there is the Church of the Redeemer, overlooking the Grand Canal with its beautiful dome and staircase. The Church of San Giacomo on the right is obscured by a sailing ship. The canal water is painted in shades of light blue and green. Between the two churches there are the palaces of Venice, arranged side by side.
The sky is clear with a few clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1747. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
