A romantic and rare view of Prati di Castello in Rome by Gaspare Vanvitelli. It is a tempera on parchment, with the Prati di Castello gate prominent and lit by the sun. In the background is St Peter’s with its palazzi. In the foreground is the Tiber, crossed by boats carrying people and goods. On the banks one can see people making their way up the riverside towards the Prati di Castello gate.
The reflection of the sky and of the vegetation near Porta Prati Castello in the waters of the Tiber is a fine detail.
