An original and luminous depiction of the basin of Venice by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the basin with all its boats, some anchored by the shore, others sailing along the Grand Canal. The painting depicts the Doge's Palace, the bell tower of St Mark's and the other palazzi of the square. The sky is clear, with a few pale pink clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Other variants of this work exist.
