The artwork
A rare and detailed historical view of Tivoli and the Aniene River, painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli. A clear sky and faint white clouds form the background. Boatmen are seen on the riverbank at the far end. On either side of the river are tenements, while the Roman hills appear in the background. The details are blurred, highlighting the river and the bridge, with the tenements along the banks. The sky is streaked with clouds, but remains clear.
The dominant colors are brown and blue, with their infinite shades, which Gaspare Vanvitelli created between 1710 and 1715.
This painting is also part of the extensive oeuvre that van Wittel created during his stays in Rome. The painting is part of the Breamore House Museum, Hampshire, UK.
