C.S. Hammond & Co.'s "Map of the Vietnam Conflict," published around 1965, is a full-color folding map that details the Vietnamese conflict and the surrounding area in Southeast Asia. The map includes five sections: a large map of Vietnam, smaller maps showing Asia and Southeast Asia in economic terms, one highlighting mountains and rivers, and a map dedicated to the "struggle for freedom in Asia." The main frame includes symbols for capitals, international borders, canals, railways, roads, major air bases, and the land landing zones of U.S. Marine and Army forces in 1965, while the U.S. Seventh Fleet is indicated in offshore waters. The map is complemented by a numbered and alphabetical legend identifying cities and locations, offering a comprehensive overview of the geography and military situation of the area at that historical moment.
On the reverse of the map, a descriptive panel outlines the chronology of events leading to the crisis in Vietnam from 1945 to 1965, with annotations on key moments such as the increase in American troops and the first significant battle against the Viet Cong. The cover illustrates two iconic military helicopters of the era, the Piasecki H-21 and the UH-1B "Huey," symbols of American operations in the field. This map also serves as an educational document illustrating the complex geopolitical and military dynamics of the Vietnam War during its initial escalation, combining cartographic precision and informational clarity.
