The artwork
The Madonna has already said yes to the angel, and Pontormo paints her in the moment just after, as she lifts a foot to climb a step of pietra serena. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- The Virgin standing, wrapped in her mantle, as she climbs a stone step.
- A slender figure, lovely on a staircase landing.
- A gift for a Maria or for anyone who loves Florentine sacred art.
It is the other half of the Annunciation that Pontormo frescoed between 1527 and 1528 in the Capponi Chapel, in Santa Felicita in Florence. The angel, the other print of the pair, is on the other side of the same wall.
Between the two is a window with a stained-glass panel by Guillaume de Marcillat, from 1526, and since the seventeenth century also a pietre dure reliquary of Saint Charles Borromeo. The Virgin turns her gaze towards the window.
After the 1966 flood the fresco was detached from the wall and remounted on a new support, and today it is free of later repainting.
In a bedroom or an entrance hall, her tall figure keeps company with whoever passes by. It is a tender gift for someone who has just found out they are expecting a baby.
