The artwork
Venus and Mars is a mixed-technique painting on panel by Sandro Botticelli, datable to around 1482-1483 and held in the National Gallery in London.
The work is generally dated after his return from his stay in Rome (1482), because of the classicising influences the artist could have studied on the ancient sarcophagi of the Eternal City. The scene shows Venus, goddess of love and beauty, seated beside Mars, god of war, asleep and vulnerable. Botticelli uses this contrast to symbolise the harmony between love and strength, showing how passion can tame violence and conflict. The artist pays great attention to detail: the delicate expressions, the gestures of the figures and the surrounding natural elements, such as the playing cupids, contribute to a sense of lightness and formal perfection. The refined colours, balanced composition and careful perspective show Botticelli's mastery in fusing mythological narrative, moral allegory and aesthetic beauty.
